81–91 cm (32–36 in) long. Watch it at dawn at the Chuncho clay lick and in the Manu Reserved Zone.

We filmed this jaguar in October 2026, walking along a sandy beach of the Manu River in the Manu Reserved Zone, on our 6-day tour. The Reserved Zone is where travelers have the best chance of seeing a jaguar, although no wild sighting is ever guaranteed.

Percy Huanca is the founder and general manager of Amazon Trip Peru. He was born in Manu National Park into a Matsiguenka family and grew up there. He worked as a native guide in Manu before founding the company in 2018, and he still leads many of our Manu and Tambopata expeditions himself. He hires guides and crew from the native communities along Manu and Tambopata.

"I considered myself a picky eater and a bit set in my ways, so I was worried about the food, the accommodation and the dangers in the jungle, but the chef was great and made delicious, varied food for every meal. There were always pasta or potato dishes for us fussy eaters, and the soups were incredible. The first lodge was basic, but I had a good night's sleep and a hot shower with electricity all night. The second lodge was beautiful, modern cabins surrounded by forest. They only have electricity for 2 hours, so make sure you charge your things when you can. Having a cold shower was a bit tough, but a very small price to pay to experience the Amazon..."
"We did the 3-day tour with David as our tour guide. He was very kind and able to answer all our questions. We could see his passion for nature and the rainforest. He carefully picked a route through the jungle to make sure we saw as much wildlife as possible on our tour. We always felt safe around him and the rest of the group. They brought their own chef, who made us the most incredible feasts three times a day. The lodges we stayed in were basic but comfortable. We can only recommend doing this tour."

The dry season, roughly May to October, is the easiest time: drier trails and lower rivers. SERNANP opens the Manu Reserved Zone to visitors from April to November. From November to March expect more rain and higher rivers. Read our Manu National Park guide.
Three days is the minimum: Manu by road from Cusco (cloud forest plus two nights in the lowlands) or Tambopata with a one-hour flight to Puerto Maldonado. To reach the Manu Reserved Zone, where the chances of seeing jaguars and giant otters are best, plan 6 to 8 days.
Manu is reached by road from Cusco, crosses the cloud forest and is wilder and more remote. Tambopata is reached by plane (about one hour from Cusco) or by bus (about 10 hours), so it fits shorter trips. See our Manu vs Tambopata comparison.
On most of our Manu trips we see capybaras and, in the cloud forest, the Andean cock-of-the-rock, Peru's national bird. At dawn, macaws such as the blue-and-yellow macaw gather at the clay licks of Tambopata and Manu. Giant otters, tapirs and jaguars need more luck: Sandoval Lake and the 6 to 8-day Manu Reserved Zone tours give you the best chances. No wild sighting is ever guaranteed.
Pack light long-sleeved shirts and long pants, a rain jacket, a warm layer, insect repellent, a headlamp, sandals and a small daypack. You do not need rubber boots, towels or bottled water: our tours provide rubber boots and drinking water, and the lodges have towels and mosquito nets. See our full Amazon packing list.
It is strongly recommended. Peru does not require it at the border, but the US CDC recommends it for travelers going below 2,300 m in the Cusco and Madre de Dios regions, which includes Manu and Tambopata, and SERNANP asks visitors to the Manu River and the Pusharo petroglyphs to get vaccinated.
