Bird Watching Piuray Lake and the Vilcanota High Andes:
We pick you up at your hotel in Cusco and head to the historic Inca city of Chinchero wi will bird watching and stop at Piuray and Huaypo lakes, where water birds abound.
Species we should see easily include Cinnamon, Puna and Yellow-billed Teal, Yellow-billed Pintail, Andean Duck, Andean Goose, Silvery & White-tufted Grebes, Andean Gull, Puna and Andean Ibis and Andean Coot. Short-billed pipit and Slender billed Miner is often in the grassy area along with Andean Lapwing and maybe Puna Snipe.
Variable Hawk, Cinereous Harrier and Black-chested Buzzard-Eagles are often seen. There is always a chance to see something unusual here.
Crossing the Maras plateau with stunning views of the Vilcanota mountain chain, we’ll turn up the Lamay Valley to the high Puna grassland and lakes. We can look here for Giant Coot( a short hike) and in the Austral winter a variety of Ground-Tyrants & Sierra Finches are always present.
Other possibilities include Cream-winged Cinclodes, Peruvian Sierra -Finch, Streak-throated Canastero, White-winged Diuca-Finch, Common Miner, Rusty-fronted Canastero and many more Andean passerines.
We return you to Cusco or if you wish drop you off in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
