This type of macaw belonging to the psittaciform family measures between 76 to 86 cm and has blue plumage on the upper part and yellow on the chest. Although in many species of birds the color of their plumage varies between males and females, in macaws there is almost no difference in both cases, making it difficult to identify their sex. Their diet is based on hard seeds, which is why their beaks are curved and pointed for a more effective bite.
Where can we observe macaws?
Being a bird from South America, in our country Peru, you will have a high probability of observing them in the Manu National Park and more likely in the Tambopata Reserve. We will mainly find them in the licks near our lodges. In order to appreciate them it is necessary to get up early, generally these birds descend to the licks between 5 am and 7 am.
Curiosities of the Blue Yellow Macaw
- When macaws find a partner, their mating is for life.
- When they reproduce, they both raise the chicks, feeding and protecting them.
- As they are birds that also feed on fruits, in times of food shortages they tend to eat fruits that are not ripe, so to help digest this food they consume clay and thus detoxify.
- When they can’t make their nests, they sometimes drive other birds out of their own nests to take over.
