The suth American Tapir in Perú

It is one of the largest mammals that live in the Peruvian Amazon. An adult specimen can measure between 1.5 meters and 2.5 meters, although they do not have good eyesight, they have a good sense of smell, favoring it when looking for food.

These animals also stand out for their abilities in the water, they are good at swimming and diving, you will be surprised at the distances they can swim in highly flowing rivers. These animals are normally more nocturnal, they take advantage of transfers during the night to look for food and liks that balance their nutritional status.

Where can we find them?

The tapir normally lives at sea level in the Amazon jungle and can reach up to 1700 meters above sea level. The place where it can be found most frequently is in the Tambopata reserve in Madre de Dios Peru, in lakes, swamps or on the banks of the river.

It is also very common to see them in the lakes of the Manu National Park in Peru, and sometimes crossing the Madre de Dios river from one side to the other. The tapir is also found in clay licks or liks, during the night these animals look for minerals in the earth to complement their diet.
