How to Get from Cusco to the Amazon: Manu by Road or Tambopata by Air
The Peruvian Amazon is much closer to Cusco than most travelers expect. From Cusco there are two main ways in: overland to Manu National Park, or by air (or bus) to Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to Tambopata. Here is how each one works, how long it takes and which one fits your trip.
The options at a glance
| Route | How | Travel time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cusco to Manu | By road with your tour, then by boat | A full day to the rainforest lodges | Seeing the whole change from the Andes to the Amazon |
| Cusco to Puerto Maldonado by air | Direct flight, then car and boat to the lodge | About 1 hour of flying | Short trips and the shortest transfers |
| Cusco to Puerto Maldonado by bus | Interoceanic Highway | About 10 hours | Tight budgets |
Cusco to Manu by road
Manu is reached by road, and on our tours the transportation is included. You leave Cusco at about 6:00 a.m. in a private minivan, stop at the pre-Inca burial towers of Ninamarca and the Andean town of Paucartambo, and climb to the park entrance at Acjanaco. According to SERNANP, Peru’s protected areas service, this first stretch to Acjanaco and the Tres Cruces viewpoint is 143 km (89 miles), about 4 hours.
From there the road drops through the cloud forest, where you stop to look for the cock-of-the-rock and other birds, down to the river port of Atalaya, at about 350 m (1,150 ft). The last leg is by boat on the Alto Madre de Dios River, and you reach your lodge in the afternoon. The Manu Reserved Zone is further: our 6 to 8-day tours continue by boat down the Madre de Dios River to Boca Manu and up the Manu River, reaching it between days 2 and 4.
Can you do it on your own? Only the high Andean sector at Tres Cruces can be visited independently. The Manu River (Reserved Zone) and Pusharo sectors require a tour operator authorized by the park.
Cusco to Puerto Maldonado by air
Puerto Maldonado is the gateway to the Tambopata National Reserve. At the time of writing, LATAM and Sky operate direct flights from Cusco of about one hour, and there are also flights from Lima. From Puerto Maldonado you continue by road and river; SERNANP lists about 30 minutes by river and a 3 km walk to the Sandoval Lake sector, around 3 hours by river to the middle Tambopata and 5.5 hours to the upper Tambopata. On our Tambopata tour we pick you up at the airport or bus station and drive about 2 hours in a 4×4 to the Tambopata River, then take a 30-minute boat ride to the lodge, so you are in the forest by lunchtime.
Cusco to Puerto Maldonado by bus
Buses cover the 477 km (296 miles) of the Interoceanic Highway in about 10 hours, with departures mainly in the evening and early morning. It is the cheapest option, but if you take an overnight bus you arrive tired for your first day in the forest. The highway itself crosses a high Andean pass at about 4,725 m (15,500 ft) with views of Ausangate before descending to the lowlands, which is why our 7-day Tambopata birding tour uses it as a birding route.
What about Iquitos?
Iquitos, in northern Peru, cannot be reached by road from Cusco: you need to fly or travel by river. We do not operate there.
Which route should you choose?
- Choose Manu by road if the journey through the Andes and the cloud forest is part of what you want to see, or if you want to reach the Reserved Zone.
- Fly to Puerto Maldonado if you have only 3 days or prefer the shortest transfers.
- Take the bus only if budget matters more than time.
