Manu vs Tambopata: Which Peruvian Amazon Trip Is Right for You?
We run tours to both Manu National Park and the Tambopata National Reserve, so we hear this question every week: which one should I choose? Both protect rainforest in southeastern Peru, both have macaw clay lick tours and both are reached from Cusco. The difference is how you get there, how many days you need and how deep into the forest you want to go. Here is an honest comparison, with real prices and official data.

Getting there
Manu tours start in Cusco and travel overland, with transportation included. Our tours leave at about 6:00 a.m. in a private minivan, cross the Andes through Paucartambo, enter the park at Acjanaco and spend the day descending through the cloud forest, stopping for birds and views, before taking a boat from the river port of Atalaya to the lodge. The drive itself is part of the experience, because you see the whole change from mountains to rainforest. The trade-off is that the first and last days are mostly travel days.
Tambopata starts in Puerto Maldonado, which you reach by flight from Cusco or Lima, or by bus. On our tour we pick you up at the airport or bus station, drive about 2 hours in a 4×4 to the Tambopata River and take a 30-minute boat ride to the lodge. You are in the forest by lunchtime on day 1.
How many days do you need?
If you only have 3 days, both work, but they give you different things. A 3-day Manu tour is a beautiful introduction to the cloud forest and the lowland rainforest of the Cultural Zone, with one full day at the lodge. A 3-day Tambopata tour gives you more time in the lowland forest because the transfers are shorter.
If you have 6 days or more, Manu is the stronger choice. Only longer trips reach the Manu Reserved Zone along the Manu River, with the Otorongo and Salvador oxbow lakes, giant otters and two nights at Casa Matsiguenka. With 3 or 4 days you will not get there.
Wildlife: what each one does best
- Manu covers a huge altitude range, so you see two worlds: the cloud forest, home of the Andean cock-of-the-rock and woolly monkeys, and the lowland rainforest. On longer tours the Reserved Zone adds giant otters, a macaw clay lick and a night watch for tapirs at a clay lick.
- Tambopata is all lowland rainforest. Our tour focuses on the Chuncho clay lick, where red-and-green, scarlet and blue-and-yellow macaws come to eat clay at sunrise, plus a night search for caimans by boat. SERNANP also highlights Lake Sandoval, near Puerto Maldonado, for its giant otters and macaws.
In both places jaguars are sometimes seen on the riverbanks, but no one can guarantee a sighting.
Cost
Our Manu tours cost from $300 (3 days) to $1,400 (8 days) per person, including round-trip transportation from Cusco, guide, boat, lodging, meals from lunch on day 1 and the park entrance fee. Our Tambopata tour costs $295 per person for 3 days, including airport or bus station transfers in Puerto Maldonado and the reserve and clay lick entrance fees, but not the flight or bus to Puerto Maldonado, which you need to add to compare.
When to go
SERNANP recommends visiting Manu from April to November and Tambopata from May to October, the drier months. During the rainy season, from roughly December to March, the forest is still beautiful, but it rains more often, rivers rise and the road to Manu can be slower. Both regions are in the area where the US CDC recommends the yellow fever vaccine, and SERNANP lists it as a requirement for Manu.
What about Iquitos?
Iquitos, in northern Peru, is the other major gateway to the Amazon, reached only by air or by river. We do not operate there, so we cannot compare it from first-hand experience. If Machu Picchu and Cusco are part of your trip, Manu and Tambopata are much easier to combine with them.
So which one should you choose?
- Choose Manu if you want to travel overland from the Andes to the Amazon, love birds and the cloud forest, or have 6 days or more to reach the Reserved Zone.
- Choose Tambopata if you have only 3 days, prefer to fly, want the shortest transfers or are traveling with people who would find long drives hard.
Still not sure? Tell us your dates and how many days you have, and we will tell you honestly which trip fits best. Compare all our Amazon tours, see the Tambopata tour or read our Manu National Park guide.
